You can make your own repellent using any kitchen oil like olive mixed with around 5 to 10% of either lemon grass essential oil, citronella or both. It only takes a small amount of this applied here and there to deter mosquitoes and other pests. There are pre-made alternatives available at stores like Natural Grocer as well.
Shouldve also added some info about sunscreen and the toxins in that stuff π i feel like ever since I became aware of this, the sunscreen propaganda has gotten worse. Maybe because I live in FL (basically Sarasota lol), but everywhere I go, someone is emphasizing the importance of using sunscreen. And cosmetics! (Maybe because I'm female...) everyone is constantly talking about using cosmetics that have sunscreen....
Its so over-bearing lately that it becomes an immediate red flag. Why is everyone so interested in having me bathe in sunscreen - even if I'm not going outside? π€
Well the answer is obvious. But so many people still don't know that sunscreen is one of the top causes of skin cancer- not sunshine.
I used to buy the best mosquito repellant in Walmart, outdoors section, until it was discontinued. It was Cutter, solid stick. I don't know what the formula was, but it was damn effective. This was in the late 80's, where I did all my work, sometimes late into the night, on an open carport on motorcycles and hot rods, in south eastern South Carolina.
Later, moved into a place that has a 2 car indoor garage in Georgia, and gave up the motorcycles due to a bone disease.

You can also grow mosquito repellent plants at your front and back doors to stop them coming in the house π€
Oh and drink old fashioned tonic water for the quinine in the blood stream.ππ€

"...locally acquired cases of malaria..."
Curious wording.
Good pick up, that just means, "see, we can just lie right to your face."
Maybe malaria is actually a canned drink and comes in cases of six or twelve.
Maybe they were bought at the local big box store. Probably at a deep discount.

I seem to recall seeing; maybe using; a stick insect repellant some years ago. I just did a quick search and found Cutter's webpage; I checked to see; just for kicks; if they make it any more. Sadly; they don't. (https://www.cutterinsectrepellents.com/Solution-Center/Personal.aspx?pageNum=1)
It seems so often that the things that work the best end up being discontinued.
I'm sorry about your bone disease. I hope you're doing well in spite of it.
